SCANS Dr. Daphna Levit : Markets and Ethics

Again and again we see the global financial markets spinning in confusion and chaos, government leaders and central bankers frantically seeking ways to halt recession, to prevent the European markets from collapsing and to respond to the “Occupy Wall Street” protests.  The basic assumptions of capitalism are being re-examined. Although we hastened to condemn the greed of individuals and institutions that caused or exacerbated the crisis, many of us have not examined the history of those values that encourage material success and consumerism.  The cry for regulation is loud and clear but what should be the role of regulation in the ethical limitation of the markets?  Can we make a wise determination about the boundaries of free markets?
To discuss these issues more effectively, this course will cover the basic concepts used to measure and describe economies; will look at the history of the economic art/science; and will question the legitimacy and efficacy of economic decisions.

Lifelong Learning Lecture Series Ralph Getson

      Ralph Getson

Foreign Protestant settlement of Lunenburg & Mahone Bay

Lunenburg was founded in 1753 and Mahone Bay in 1754, by a  group of people  known as the ‘foreign’ Protestants. They came from central and south-western Germany, Switzerland and Montbeliard under the auspices of the British government. They came to the New World to farm, but within a generation turned from the land to the sea and became fishermen and skilled shipwrights. This illustrated presentation will trace the origins of the people, the early settlement of Lunenburg and Mahone Bay, along with the traits, customs and legacy that has survived today of this remarkable group.

Ralph Getson is an eighth generation ‘foreign’ Protestant.  His ancestor came to Nova Scotia from northern Germany in 1751. The Getsons became fishermen out of LaHave, NS.  Ralph holds degrees in history and education from Dalhousie and Saint Mary’s Universities.  Since 1984 he has been Curator of Education at the Fisheries Museum of the Atlantic, responsible for school programmes, exhibits and research.  Ralph lives in Lunenburg and has a keen interest in local history.

      Conversations with Mike Wearing

Search and Rescue in Nova Scotia

      Mike Wearing

One often sees a short item on television about a search for a lost person, where ground search and rescue volunteers were involved. The item often includes a brief view of one or two orange trucks and people coming out of the woods dressed in orange clothes with packs on their backs and perhaps a brief word from one of those involved. But one may wonder who are these volunteers, what do they do, how are they trained, and how a search is conducted?

Mike Wearing has been a ground search & rescue volunteer for six years and has participated in over 25 searches. He will talk about how search & rescue started in Nova Scotia, what happens on a search, and how the volunteer searchers are trained.

Lifelong Learning Lecture Series Colin Starnes

      Colin Starnes

University of King’s College and the Foundation Year Programme – Looking Backward and Forward

The fascinating story of King’s College – the oldest chartered university in Canada and the strange origin of its often imitated but never copied first year university programme.  This programme became the “gold standard in undergraduate education”.  How did it start, what is it and where is it pointing?

Colin Starnes, on graduating from Bishop’s University in 1963, won a Rockefeller Fellowship and studied theology for three years at Harvard.  After a two year interlude fishing lobsters from his own boat on the South Shore, he took an MA in Religious Studies at McGill University and a PhD in Classics at Dalhousie University, where he taught until retirement.  Between 1993 and 2003, Colin served as the President and Vice Chancellor of King’s College where he had started teaching in the Foundation Year Programme (FYP) from its inception in 1972.  After retiring in 2003, he organized and taught a version of FYP for some of the parents of his former students.  He still teaches a not-for–credit, but free version of FYP to marginalized adults who never had the opportunity to attend university.
