Café Canada is sponsored by the South Shore Chapter of the Council of Canadians. The Council of Canadians is a citizens’ advocacy organization with close to 100,000 members. Its national office is in Ottawa with Regional Chapters throughout Canada. Maude Barlow is the Honorary Chairperson.
Café Canada hosts monthly gatherings presenting a speaker, a panel, a film, or just a topic of concern to the community followed by discussion. Topics have included such things as: our public health system, local food, peak oil, the corporate media, poverty, corporate globalization, Canadian sovereignty, water, environment, sustainability, energy, local transportation, war in Afghanistan, The Security and Prosperity Agreement. Fair trade coffee and tea, and refreshments provided by our loyal attendees, are served during a break which offers opportunity for fellowship. There is no admission fee and all are welcome.
In addition to the Café Canada meetings, the COC Chapter sponsors a series of film nights called “Movie Night at the Centre” in cooperation with Cinema Politica, who provide us with excellent documentaries related to many of the issues which concern the Chapter.

The Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation

The Bluenose Coastal Action Foundation (BCAF) is a non-profit community-based charitable organization with a mandate to address the environmental concerns within Lunenburg County, Nova Scotia. BCAF’s goals are to promote the restoration, enhancement, and conservation of our ecosystem through research, education, and action. The organization receives direction from a volunteer Board of Directors supported through a full time Executive Director. BCAF has been an established member of the Lunenburg County community since its inception in December 1993. Over the past 16 years, BCAF has successfully completed a number of projects in the Towns of Mahone Bay, Lunenburg, and Bridgewater, as well as the Village of Chester. The majority of our projects involve a public outreach and education component and have addressed numerous environmental themes over the years such as: climate change, habitat restoration, species at risk, water quality, solid waste education, pollution prevention, water and energy conservation, and watershed management planning, to name only a few. BCAF called the Mahone Bay Centre home this past summer, 2009.
Summer Students

During the summer of 2009, the Mahone Bay Centre received a summer student grant from Canada Summer Jobs to employ a student worker to paint the old half of the Centre. The Centre then hired additional student workers to help finish the task. We would like to take this time to thank Kelly MacDonald, Kris Richards (both pictured right), Colin Oxenham and Shane Morrison for their fabulous work!
